Roblox announces 'Build,' AI tools that let anyone create games

Roblox is rolling out a new set of AI-powered tools called "Build," designed to let almost anyone create their own games on the platform. The company is betting that lowering the technical barrier to entry will dramatically expand the number of user-generated experiences available to its millions of players.

The "Build" suite includes features like an AI assistant that can generate 3D objects from simple text descriptions. Instead of learning complex modeling software, a user could type "a wooden treasure chest" and the system would produce a usable asset. Another tool focuses on terrain generation, allowing creators to shape entire landscapes with a few prompts. Roblox also introduced a system for automatically generating code for basic game logic, which could help beginners who have no programming experience.

The move is a clear attempt to shift Roblox from a platform where most users play games to one where a much larger percentage actively create them. Currently, the vast majority of content is built by a relatively small community of dedicated developers. By offering these generative AI shortcuts, Roblox hopes to turn casual players into hobbyist creators.

Some existing developers have expressed concerns that AI-generated content could flood the marketplace with low-quality experiences. However, Roblox has stated that moderation and quality control systems are being updated alongside the new tools. The company believes that empowering more creators will ultimately lead to more unique and engaging worlds, even if some of the early results are rough around the edges. The "Build" tools are being rolled out to select users first, with a wider release planned for later this year.
