PlayerUnknown’s studio is downsizing, making its Prologue game free, and looking into refunding those who bought it

PlayerUnknown’s studio is downsizing, making its Prologue game free, and looking into refunding those who bought it

The studio behind the creator of PUBG is scaling back. PlayerUnknown Productions, led by Brendan Greene, has announced a significant downsizing of its operations. Alongside this restructuring, the team has made its experimental game "Prologue" completely free to play on Steam. For those who purchased the title before this change, the studio is actively looking into offering refunds.

All further development on Prologue has been halted. The game, which was intended as a technical showcase for a massive, procedurally generated world, will no longer receive updates or new features. Greene explained that the project served its purpose as a research and development tool, but the studio's resources are now being redirected toward the next phase of their long-term vision.

The downsizing appears to be a strategic pivot rather than a collapse. Greene stated that the team is "streamlining" to focus on a more ambitious, yet undefined, project. He emphasized that the core team remains committed to building the technology for a truly open-world sandbox experience, but acknowledged that the current economic climate and the scale of the work required a leaner structure.

For players who bought Prologue, the refund process is still being figured out. The studio has not yet provided a specific timeline or method, but they have promised to share details soon. In the meantime, the game remains available for free, allowing anyone to explore the vast, empty landscapes that were the foundation of Greene's next big idea.
