5 puzzle games that are secretly the best co-op games

Sometimes the best multiplayer moments come from games that were never designed for them. Puzzle games, in particular, have a way of turning a solo brain-teaser into a shared adventure. Here are five titles that secretly shine as co-op experiences, even if they started as single-player affairs.

First is "The Witness." On its surface, it is a solitary island of line puzzles. But hand a second player the controller, and it becomes a game of communication. One person navigates the island while the other calls out patterns and solves puzzles from memory. The real challenge is not the puzzle itself, but describing it clearly to your partner.

Next, "Baba Is You" is a logic game where you rewrite the rules. In co-op, one player focuses on the puzzle state while the other experiments with rule changes. It turns into a frantic debate over which word to push where. You will argue, laugh, and occasionally break the game together.

"Portal 2" already has a co-op mode, but the single-player campaign works just as well with two people. One controls movement, the other handles portals. It requires constant coordination and trust. You will learn a lot about your friend's patience when they accidentally drop you into a pit of deadly goo.

"Return of the Obra Dinn" is a detective game about identifying a ship's dead crew. In single-player, it is a lonely hunt. With a friend, it becomes a shared investigation. One person studies the clues while the other sketches timelines on paper. The satisfaction of solving a case together beats any solo victory.

Finally, "The Talos Principle" is a philosophical puzzle game. In co-op, one player solves the physical puzzles while the other reads the lore and debates the meaning of consciousness. It turns a quiet meditation into a lively discussion about AI, ethics, and whether that laser puzzle is even possible.

These games prove that the best co-op experiences are not always built into the menu. Sometimes they emerge from the simple act of passing the controller and saying, "What do you think?"
