Sony confirmed this week that its layoffs at Bungie have eliminated nearly 300 positions, effectively gutting the core development team behind Destiny 2. The cuts, which were announced internally earlier this month, have removed almost the entire staff working directly on the live-service shooter, according to sources familiar with the situation.
The layoffs represent a major restructuring for the studio, which Sony acquired in 2022 for $3.6 billion. Bungie had already undergone two rounds of layoffs in the past year, but this latest wave is the most severe. Employees were told that the reductions were necessary to align the company's costs with its revenue, as Destiny 2 has underperformed financially in recent seasons.
A Sony spokesperson said the company is refocusing Bungie on a smaller number of projects, including the upcoming "Marathon" extraction shooter and a new sci-fi action game. However, the loss of so many Destiny 2 developers raises questions about the game's future content pipeline. Bungie had previously promised a new expansion for 2025, but it is unclear if that plan remains intact.
Former employees have taken to social media to share their frustration, with many criticizing Sony's management for what they describe as a short-sighted decision. One laid-off developer said the studio had been "bled dry" by corporate demands for higher profits. The layoffs have also sparked renewed debate about job security in the gaming industry, which has seen more than 10,000 job cuts so far this year.
