While PlayStation seems committed to moving away from physical copies, don't expect a big homebrew scene to step in and fill that gap anytime soon. Sony has made it clear they are not going to talk about the disc manufacturing process, and that silence is a deliberate choice.
The company has been pushing digital downloads hard for years now. The PS5 Digital Edition, the constant sales on the PlayStation Store, and the way they bundle digital codes with consoles all point in one direction. Physical media is becoming a smaller part of their business, and they want it that way. But even as they phase out discs, they are not about to hand over any technical knowledge that could help someone else make their own.
There is a reason for this. If Sony started explaining how they press a disc, what kind of encryption they use, or how the data is laid out, it would open the door for people to try and replicate it. That could lead to piracy, but more importantly, it could lead to a community of makers who want to produce their own physical games. Sony does not want that. They want control. They want you buying from their store, not from some indie pressing plant in someone's garage.
So the process stays a mystery. No patents explained, no factory tours, no behind the scenes videos. Just silence. For anyone hoping that a grassroots movement would keep physical PlayStation games alive, this is a clear answer. Sony is not going to help you. They are moving on, and they are taking the knowledge with them.
