Atari and its many teams are bringing games thought long dead back to life, and the latest piece of that revival is a handheld console that looks like a slice of 1980s futurism. At Summer Game Fest, the company showed off its new Atari slate, a portable device designed to play classic titles from the company's golden age. We got a chance to hold it, and the first impression is that it feels more substantial than a simple novelty item.
The slate is surprisingly heavy, with a solid plastic shell that mimics the wood-grain and black styling of the old Atari 2600. The screen is bright and responsive, though it is not a high-resolution modern panel. That is fine, because the games on display -- old arcade ports like "Asteroids" and "Centipede" -- looked crisp and clean without any of the blurring that plagues cheap emulation boxes. The D-pad and single button layout are faithful to the original joystick, but with a more tactile click.
What stood out most was the software. Atari has curated a library that goes beyond the obvious hits. There are deep cuts from the 2600 and 5200 catalogs, including titles that never saw a wide release. The interface is simple: you scroll through a list of cartridges, and the game loads in seconds. There is no menu clutter, no online store, no ads. It is just a box of games you can turn on and play.
The battery life seems decent, though we did not run it dry during the demo. The price point has not been announced, but if Atari can keep it under a certain threshold, this could be the retro device that actually gets used, not just displayed on a shelf. It is a focused piece of hardware for people who remember when a game fit on a chip and the biggest challenge was getting past the first screen.
