Like the Carmines, I’m dying… to play more of Gears of War: E-Day

Like the Carmines, I’m dying… to play more of Gears of War: E-Day

I have always been a campaign-first player when it comes to Gears of War. The story of Marcus Fenix and his brothers in arms is what kept me coming back. But after spending serious time with the upcoming prequel, Gears of War: E-Day, I have to admit something surprising. The multiplayer and the new Horde Siege mode are the real stars here. I am honestly dying to play more.

The team at The Coalition has done something clever. They took the heavy, cover-based shooting that defines the series and made it feel fresh without losing the weight. The Lancer still kicks like a mule, and the chainsaw bayonet is as satisfying as ever. But the movement is snappier. You can slide into cover faster, and the wall-bouncing technique that high-level players love feels smoother and more intentional.

Horde Siege is the big surprise. It takes the classic wave-based survival and adds a layer of strategy. You are not just holding a single position anymore. The map shifts, and you have to move with your squad to secure new objectives. The enemy variety is brutal. The Locust feel smarter, flanking more aggressively and using the environment against you. Playing with a team that communicates is a rush. When the music swells and the Swarmers close in, it is pure chaos.

The visuals are stunning. The Unreal Engine 5 work is on full display. The ruined cityscapes look photorealistic, and the gore is over-the-top in the best way. Every headshot and every evisceration feels visceral.

I still want a great campaign. E-Day promises to tell the story of the first Emergence Day, and I am eager to see how it connects to the larger lore. But right now, I am hooked on the multiplayer. The matches are tight, the gunplay is rewarding, and Horde Siege is the best cooperative mode the series has seen in years. If the final game delivers on this promise, Gears of War is back.
