Amazon has spent years trying to crack the video game industry, pouring billions into game development and a streaming platform called Luna. So far, the results have been mixed at best. But according to Jeff Gattis, a general manager at Amazon, the company may have been looking in the wrong place. The real secret weapon, he suggests, might already be in millions of living rooms: Prime Video.
In a recent reflection on Amazon's gaming journey, Gattis acknowledged the company's well-documented struggles. Despite having deep pockets, a massive cloud infrastructure through AWS, and a global distribution network, Amazon has failed to produce a breakout hit game. The problem, Gattis implied, was not a lack of resources but a lack of the right entry point. Traditional game development and even cloud gaming services like Luna require convincing players to download new launchers or subscribe to yet another platform. That is a tough sell.
Prime Video changes the equation. It is already a household name with a massive, engaged user base. By integrating game content directly into the Prime Video interface, Amazon can bypass the friction of a separate gaming app. Instead of asking users to find a game, the game can find them. Gattis pointed to the potential for interactive experiences tied to popular shows and movies, blurring the line between watching and playing. If Amazon can turn passive viewers into active players with a single click, it might finally solve the puzzle that has eluded it for years. The key is not building a better console or store, but leveraging the one screen people already have open.
