Microsoft and Undead Labs have finally put a date on the horizon for the next chapter in their zombie survival series. A new trailer for State of Decay 3, shown during a recent Xbox showcase, confirms that the game is targeting a release in 2027. This marks the first concrete timing fans have received since the game was first teased years ago.
The trailer offers a grim look at the post-apocalyptic world, leaning heavily into the series' signature blend of resource management and brutal combat. It shows a lone survivor navigating a frozen, overgrown landscape, suggesting a shift in environment and atmosphere. The footage also hints at more detailed character models and a darker, more cinematic tone compared to previous entries.
While the 2027 window gives the studio plenty of time to polish the experience, it also means fans of the franchise will have to wait a bit longer to return to the undead-infested maps. The original State of Decay launched over a decade ago, and its sequel has remained a staple of the Xbox Game Pass library. With this new timeline, Undead Labs is clearly aiming to deliver a major leap forward rather than a simple update. For now, the countdown has officially begun.
