Just a few years after going all-in on videogames, Hasbro is pulling an Xbox-style move by narrowing its focus to its biggest brands and franchises. The toy and entertainment giant recently disclosed a $56 million write-down tied to the cancellation of multiple unannounced game projects. The company did not name the specific titles, but the charge reflects a broader shift in strategy: fewer experiments, more blockbuster bets.
Despite the financial hit, Hasbro executives remain bullish on one major success story. During a recent investor call, leadership repeatedly pointed to Baldur's Gate 3 as a blueprint for future growth. The Dungeons & Dragons-based roleplaying game, developed by Larian Studios and published under Hasbro's Wizards of the Coast division, has sold over 10 million copies and won multiple Game of the Year awards. Executives described it as a "generational hit" and a model for how the company plans to license its properties going forward.
The message is clear: Hasbro wants fewer, bigger games. Instead of spreading resources across many small or mid-tier projects, the company intends to double down on high-quality, long-term partnerships with top-tier developers. The $56 million loss is a painful but deliberate step in that direction. By cutting underperforming or risky projects now, Hasbro hopes to avoid the kind of portfolio bloat that has plagued other media companies.
For fans, this means the next Dungeons & Dragons or Magic: The Gathering game will likely be a major, high-budget release rather than a quick mobile spin-off. Hasbro is betting that quality over quantity will pay off in the long run, and Baldur's Gate 3 is the proof they keep coming back to.
