How TT Games Used Unreal Engine 5 to Build the Best Lego Game Ever

At the Develop Brighton conference this week, TT Games pulled back the curtain on the technical wizardry behind "Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight," the highest-rated Lego game in history. The studio revealed a suite of Unreal Engine 5 techniques that transformed the blocky, familiar Lego formula into something critics called "a genuine cinematic experience."

The breakthrough came from a custom lighting system that mimics real-world brick reflections. Instead of relying on standard global illumination, TT Games built a "brick shader" that calculates light bounce across each individual stud and edge. This gives Lego characters and environments a plastic sheen that feels tactile, not just rendered. "We wanted players to feel like they could reach out and pick up the pieces," said lead graphics engineer Sarah Chen during her talk.

Another secret is the "destruction persistence" system. In previous Lego games, smashed objects would disappear or reset quickly. Here, every broken wall, shattered vehicle, and scattered brick stays in place for the entire level. The engine tracks each fragment's physics state, allowing players to rebuild structures from the debris they created minutes earlier. This required a complete rewrite of Unreal Engine 5's chaos physics pipeline.

The team also solved a long-standing problem with Lego minifigure animation. By using a hybrid of motion matching and procedural rigging, characters now move with weight and momentum. A Batman glide feels like actual flight, not a stiff float. The developers achieved this by recording real actors in mocap suits covered with Lego studs, then mapping those movements onto the digital figures with a custom retargeting algorithm.

Perhaps the most impressive feat is the seamless open world. "Gotham City" loads in one continuous stream with no hidden loading screens. The engine pre-calculates brick density and occlusion zones, so the game can render thousands of unique Lego pieces at 60 frames per second on consoles. TT Games confirmed that this technology will carry forward into future titles, though they declined to name which franchises are next.
