Video game giant Ubisoft cuts dozens of jobs in San Francisco

The video game giant Ubisoft has cut dozens of jobs at its San Francisco location, according to a state filing. The company notified California authorities that 93 employees at its Mission Street office will be permanently laid off, with the terminations set to take effect in August.

The layoffs hit a range of roles within the office, which has been home to teams working on live-service titles and support functions. Ubisoft did not immediately provide a public statement on the specific reasons for the cuts, but the move follows a broader trend of downsizing across the gaming industry over the past two years. Major studios have repeatedly trimmed their workforces as they adjust to shifting player habits, rising development costs, and a post-pandemic market correction.

For Ubisoft, this is not an isolated event. The French publisher has already closed several studios and reduced headcount in other locations, including its offices in Montreal and Paris. The San Francisco office had been a hub for the company's live operations and quality assurance teams. Affected workers will receive severance packages and transition support, as required by state law.

The layoffs add to a growing list of job losses in the video game sector, which has seen tens of thousands of workers let go since 2023. Industry analysts point to a combination of factors, including overinvestment during the pandemic, high interest rates, and a slowdown in consumer spending on new releases. For the employees in San Francisco, the news brings uncertainty to a market already struggling with a tight job landscape.
