A Charming Road Trip That Fades Too Fast

A Charming Road Trip That Fades Too Fast

Outbound invites players into a sun-drenched wilderness sandbox, promising a road trip that feels more like a gentle escape than a grueling survival test. The game leans into a relaxed, almost meditative pace, where driving a beat-up van through dusty trails and stopping to explore abandoned shacks becomes the core loop. The art style is warm and inviting, with soft lighting and a color palette that evokes late afternoon drives. Early hours are genuinely delightful, as the sense of discovery is strong. You find quirky notes, solve simple environmental puzzles, and piece together the story of the world through scattered fragments. The controls are smooth, and the van handles well enough that navigation never feels like a chore.

However, the charm begins to wear thin as the road stretches on. The world, while pretty, is not as deep as it first appears. Points of interest start to feel repetitive, and the puzzles rarely evolve beyond basic fetch-and-interact tasks. The narrative hooks are present but never fully reeled in, leaving many threads dangling without satisfying payoff. By the midpoint, the initial wonder gives way to a sense of "seen it all before." The game's biggest strength--its laid-back, non-punishing approach--also becomes its weakness. Without real challenge or meaningful progression, the journey loses momentum. Outbound is a lovely sandbox for a weekend trip, but it runs out of surprises long before the road ends.
