1998 Was the Best Year for Video Games, and These 10 Titles Prove It

Ask any longtime gamer to name the greatest year in video game history, and you will hear the same answer again and again: 1998. It was not just a good year for releases; it was a seismic shift in what games could be. The industry moved from simple entertainment to complex storytelling, immersive worlds, and technical breakthroughs that still influence modern design.

Leading the charge was Half-Life. Before it, first-person shooters were mostly about shooting anything that moved. Valve changed that with a seamless narrative, scripted events, and a silent protagonist who actually felt like part of the world. It did not just set a new bar; it built a new building.

Then there was Resident Evil 2. Capcom took survival horror and made it cinematic, with the terrifying Mr. X stalking players through the Raccoon City police station. The dual scenarios and the sheer tension made it a benchmark for the genre.

But the list goes deeper. Metal Gear Solid delivered a movie-like espionage thriller with stealth mechanics that had never been tried on that scale. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time took a beloved franchise into 3D and nailed it, creating a template for action-adventure games that is still copied today. Gran Turismo brought console racing to a level of realism that felt impossible. StarCraft became the backbone of competitive RTS play. Banjo-Kazooie proved platformers could be both charming and deep. Pokemon Red and Blue finally reached the West, starting a global phenomenon. Grim Fandango showed that adventure games could be funny, dark, and artistic. And Thief: The Dark Project invented the stealth genre as we know it.

Ten titles, one year, and a legacy that has not been matched since. For those who lived through it, 1998 was not just a good year. It was the year gaming grew up.
